I’ll Be Mary When I Mary Mary – Song Lyric (Duet)

TOM

Since moving to New York

From Cincinnati,

Conversations drive me batty.

.

Half the time I speak,

No one seems to git

Half the sense or even

Jest the gist of it.

.

So now, my friend,

I hope you’ll understand

This story of the happy life I’ve planned . . .

.

BOB

(spoken)

Tell me about it.

.

TOM

I’ll be Mary when I Mary Mary.

.

BOB

(spoken)

You’ll be what?

.

TOM

I’ll be Mary!

.

I’ll be Mary as a lark

On a picnic in the park

Or a cat that et a vary fat canary.

.

I’ll be Mary!

.

BOB

(spoken)

Oh, you’ll be merry.

.

TOM

Right!

.

I’ll be Mary when I Mary Mary.

.

BOB

(spoken)

When you what?

.

TOM

When we Mary!

.

When I take her little hand

In the sight of God and man

And no one utters anything contrary.

.

When we Mary!

.

BOB

(spoken)

I get it—when you marry.

.

TOM

Please?*

.

BOB

(spoken)

When you get married.

.

TOM

Right!

.

I’ll be Mary when I Mary Mary.

.

Since the day in January

When I met my lovely Mary

On the Staten Island Fairy,

My feelings never vary!

But I know that I’ll be even Mary-er

When I Mary her!

.

BOB

(spoken)

When you marry her.

.

TOM

That’s what I said.

.

TOM (and BOB)

I’ll (You’ll) be Mary (merry) when I (you) Mary (marry) Mary.

.

I’ll (You’ll) be Mary (merry) as a lark

On a picnic in the park

Or a cat that et (ate) a vary (very) fat canary!

.

Yes, I’ll (you’ll) be Mary (merry) when I (you) Mary (marry) Mary!

* This is how Cincinnati people say “I beg your pardon.”

This ditty invites music. I just bought my 7th keyboard system (a Roland Juno-DS) and may take a crack at it when I get around to figuring out how it works. It is a good songwriter’s machine.

    1. What a great idea! We can pick up where we left off in 1960. (I have a lot of lyrics besides this one.)
