There are two tables in this gas station
to drink your coffee at. Misjudging the time needed
to deposit stuff at the landfill, I’ve an hour
till my next appointment. Time to waste,
to kill. If I meditated, my extra time
could be filled spiritually. If I took a course
to change my life, I could study.
I’d talk to someone, but I’m among strangers.
The disease of the West is shame at hours
that create no profit, that can’t be billed.
Do wasted days add up to earlier death?
Nothing to do except study bags of snacks,
this long rack of packaging colors
gleaming in morning sunlight.
Splendid snacks! So many ways to use
the Earth’s bounty: Chex Mix, Munchies, Doodles,
Doritos, Tostitos, Ridgies, Kettle Chips!
Outside this building, a machine offers Free
Air! Somewhere lovers smooch and canoodle!
So what if all I do with these minutes
is drink coffee among endless snacks!
